An easy way to look at this is, if your main journal is 2 inchs, then a .002 clearance works, If rod journals is 1.5 inches then a .0015 works. Works for big mains & rods as well, Like a 5.5 inch main, .0055 clearance. Trying to clearance for any cam position on the rods would give similar results to clearancing valve to piston at any cam timing, there would be nothing left of either the rod or piston.
