Somebody posted a while back that disabling the opening movie fixed their crashing problem. Run FFXIConfig.exe, located in ToolsUS or ToolsEU, depending on your location, and disable it. If you're using nvidia graphics, also try enabling Graphics Stabilization, as that also fixes a known crashing problem.
