WebThere are no differences aside from the hammer. I carry a 442PC. It is internal hammer like a 642 but black finished. This makes the sights much easier to see. My wife prefers the hammer and she carries a 638. I blacked out her sights with dykem bright mark. The 438 was like the 638 but black. It is longer produced. I understand the S&W 640 is a stainless steel frame and is about 8 ounces heavier than the S&W 642 (aluminum alloy frame) while the Ruger SP101 is a stainless steel frame, but even heavier than the S&W 640. I currently plan to use .38 spcl or .38+p.
